Last night Sacramento Bloggers gathered at a private event at See's Candies at Folsom's Palladio to learn about See's Candies sweet history.
Mary See was originally from Canada. There she made her homemade chocolates for friends and family. Her son, Charles See, worked for a well-known Canadian chocolatier, Laura Secord. When the See family moved to Los Angeles, California, they brought their homemade recipes, and Charles See chose his mother's photo to embody the values of homemade quality, and friendly service.
Mary See was born on September 15, 1854. The first See's Candies shop was opened in 1921. You'll find black and white tiles on the floors in all the See's Candies shops because that was the color of Mary's kitchen.
The See's Candies factory on La Cienega in Los Angeles is where the well-known episode of "I Love Lucy" and the chocolate assembly line was filmed. Aside from the La Cienaga factory, there's one in San Francisco, and a lollipop specific factory in Burlingame, Calif. The Burlingame facility only makes lollipops, and that facility is completely nut free.
One of the hallmarks of See's Candies sweet history, are the free samples. See's believes that you should like the candy you take home. They also want you to try new pieces, and discover new favorites. This is why last year, they gave away 1 million pounds of free samples. Which is amazing, and then you find out that they sold 26 million pounds of candy last year as well. Currently, Warren Buffet owns See's Candies. He's rumored to hold board meetings stocked with See's Candies and cherry Coke (I love quirky facts).
That is a perfect Scotchmallow my dears
Did you know that the largest lollypop recorded in the Guinness Book of World Records is a See's Candies lollypop weighing in at 7,000 pounds. Popular candy flavors include Scotchmallows, which are my husband's ultimate favorite chocolate of all time.
Enjoying chocolate with friends like the lovely Margaret, yes please!
Getting to hug my fierce friend Janelle, awesome!
The Grand Opening runs today from 9:30am - 3:30pm. See's Candies will have some beautifully restored vehicles also on display.
What's your favorite See's Candies flavor?
See's invited bloggers to their store, and provided good bags and chocolates for our sampling. All opinions and facts learned are my own.
